LW Barrel for 9,3x64
I have come to realize that my 9,3x64 would be better served with a "meatier" barrel than the 22" long, pencil thin tube that it presently sports. (My shoulder would also be a touch happier.)

I am looking at a Lothar Walther long chambered "722" profile. I have been told that LW's LW-50 stainless steel is a real bitch difficult to machine. Are cutting tips/surfaces of a special alloy needed, or does it just plain wear out cutting tools faster?

Would I be best off just getting one made out of Chrome Moly? That could always be Salt Nitrided, etc.

Thanks for any input.

I chamber a lot of LW SS barrels. No problem what so ever. I use plenty of "Tap Magic" whether threading or cutting a chamber. I cut chambers at 340 RPM. Sometimes I will go to 450 RPM but I like 340 a little better. LW cuts chambers in the low 600 RPM range if I am not mistaken.

Try to look unimportant. Your enemy might be low on ammo.

Thanks for that info Doug.

Nothing like a tight fit, plenty of lubricant and velocity, eh?

Thanks again.

I have the #722 9.3x62 barrel on my FN Mauser '98. In C/M it is 25" long and IMHO the perfect profile and balance for my rifle in that calibre.

If yours is a Mauser '98 action, you can get pre-chambered, crowned and threaded barrels in #722 in 9.3x64 that screw right on. All they need is a blue or finish of your choice.

How do you imagine the 5130 pattern barrel at 26" and .625 muzzle diameter would balance on a CZ 550 in say 375?

That one should work.
