Can Someone please explain to me why the Erfurt small ring large thread actions are considered risky. I'm not disagreeing with the statement but would like to better understand the mechanics of the shortcomings. I have my theories but would really like to get the real story from those in the know on this forum.

All mauser rifles made prior to the 1930's have metallurgy that is not as strong as later rifles. When you start removing metal from the ring you are putting a lot of stress on a fragile reciever. I would carefully inspect the receiver even if using original low-pressure cartridges.

The "Erfurt" Kar98 used a large ring barrel in small ring action,which didn't leave enough meat around the barrel stub.I think they are of WWI vintage,too.
