<duckcrazy>P.O. Ackley built rifle impressions.......
What do you guys think about a rifle built by him on a 98 action in 375 H&H.Just your thoughts since I haven't seen one.May make a trip to look at this rifle. What kind of premium are they worth?

<allen day>This guy was an experimenter and a theorist, but he was no serious hunter, and he was not a fine rifle builder. His opinions I take with a grain of salt.
If he would have spent more time in the bush instead of at the reloading bench he would have found that his theories were largely a waste of time. I've seen a few "custom" rifles that he turned out, and they were on the crude side - not well-made, and I would place no special value on owning one of them.

500grainsI had a model 98 in 22-250 built by PO Ackley. It was half shot out when I bought it and completely shot out when I traded it in. It did not feed properly, probably because 22-250 is too short for a standard model 98.
It is true that Ackley was an experimenter, not a fine riflesmith.
Check that rifle very carefully before buying. And keep in mind that it was probably put together 50 years ago.

<Gary Rihn>I'll echo the above. Ackley is known for his work with cartridges, not his gunsmithing.

416SWI have 2 rifles built by Ackley
a Sako 17 rem, nothing wrong with the rifle except it now needs a new barrel.
and a Mark x 270win which has a very large chamber, I had it set back and recut but the smith wasn't able to set it back very far and the chamber is still big but it still shoots fine, always has done by the way.
