Tartan TIG Rods

I have been trying to find some of these rods, and it appears that I will have to buy a minimum quantity of 11 pounds from Rockmount. Would any of you care to participate? I'll send you your share at my price (Quoted to me as $33.99 per pound plus shipping). If I can find enough interest that I can afford to buy the rest, I'll place the order.

From the Rockmount info sheet:

" Tartan TIG
Mild/Med Steel

For mild and medium carbon steels and Chrome Moly – 4130 and 4140 or anywhere extra crack resistance is required.

A high strength (up to 95,000 PSI tensile), carbon steel alloy that provides excellent out of position characteristics and porosity free welds. Tartan is highly machinable and responds well to heat treatment, bluing and plating. "

I have been unsatisfied lately with the Brownells 3 1/2% Nickel Steel rods. The Tartan rods have been recommended by a couple of gunsmiths that I respect.

depends on the diameter I use mostly 3/32 and 1/16 If that works I would be in for a pound or so

I've used 1/16"
Tartan tig rod for years. I split an order with another gunsmith. I think it was recommended at a seminar that Jack Belk did.

I don't want to step on anyone's toes, but your buying standard 4130 filler rod at a much higher price.

Go to your local welding supply company and ask for 4130 base filler rod.

I buy 4130, 8620, and a couple mild steel fillers depending on the job.

ER70S2 or S6 depending on application is great for 90% of work needed. I like S6 for better whetting and I can get .032" wire.

The color difference between grades after hot salt bluing is nominal. Unless you NEED the strength, there is no need to use a higher alloy, which depending on application can possibly cause issues.

FWIW I'm only using 309L on ancient mauser bolts. They are finished bright so it's no matter. 309 welds anything to anything, beautifully. Has eliminated problems for the most part.

Well, I think (no confirmation yet from the company) that I have successfully made an order for the Tartan TIG rods. I was able to go through a rep to save a few bucks. I'll be in contact with those of you who want some to let you know for sure once I get the rods in hand. This has been an interesting exercise for sure!
