Dago RedWhat is this sight and where can I find replicas?
Hey guys, what is this sight called and where can I find replicas? My stepfather has a 30/40 Krag that has a peep sight on it but he talks about getting one like this, a shallow v with short vernier. I know this is what he means. He wants to put it on the barrel. also, is there a way to mount one rather than the dovetail? the barrel has a couple of holes tapped into it, but they are about 3" forward of the action, and spaced too far apart for this type of sight. Ideas?

kutenaymtnboyI may be wrong, but, I think that this is a "Buffington" sight and you might be able to find one through the "Gun List".

Dago RedHow about this one, awesome sight supposed to be original to Marlin rifles. This is on Tom Selleck's color case hardened gold inlayed lever gun. Any ideas on name of this and where to find?

Smith Enterprises makes a similar sight. I use it on a Marlin 1895 shooting silhouette.

The smith enterprises link is great, printed the page out for my stepfather. Anybody got more info on the Marlin sight and where originals or replicas can be found?

Jim WhiteDago,
That is a Marlin combination sight and is available at Buffalo Arms. On the left side of the page click on sights and iron sights and then click on Ukranian sights. They ain't cheap but they are available. Jim

Dago RedExcellent link Jim! I think I found what he is looking for. the Smith Marlin Model 95 Sight 3/8" Dovetail. I printed the page out to show him.
Thanks!

On the smith sight, you can get a peep slider in addition to the standard "U" slider. I love the peep. I can hit the rams pretty easily as long as I do my part.
the Smith sights are listed in the Brownell's catalog

The first sight you show is an Winchester sporting leaf sight from an carbine, 1873 or 1892 or 1894 models. Look at the numbers on the graduations.
If it is 1-9 then it is a blackpowder sight, if it is 1-20 then it is an smokless sight.
The second sight you show is an Hepburn/Marlin sight. It came out in 1903. You will see the old Marlin lever actions with two holes on the top of the action for these. I just got an 1892 Marlin in 32RF in the shop that has one on it. LARC in Gresham OR. has some repos of this one.

Dago RedThank you Jim. did you get my e-mail the other day?
I like the one on the bottom, but don't have a lever gun so isn't up to me. Turns out it is for Jerry's (my stepfather) Marlin 45/70. I believe it is the model 95. I think that what he wants is what Buffalo Arms sells as the Smith Marlin Model 95Sight 3/8" dovetail. Looks just like the winchester one, I cannot tell from the picture what the numbers are on the sight though.
Thanks again

<eldeguello>This is some kind of "ladder sight" from the late 1800's. Could be Winchester, Marlin, etc. It does not seem to have the "shallow 'V' " you speak of, which is a typical configuration found on British-type Express sights on dangerous game rifles! However, I suggest you contact Gary Fellers in TX, or get a Dixie Gun Works catalog. Also, Numrich Arms/Gun Parts Corporation might have some of these things, as well as the sources mentioned in previous posts.

AtkinsonThe first one is a typical Saddle Ring Carbine Mod 94 sight, called a ladder sight...
The second one is a Marlin sight for the Mod 36 in 30-30, 25-36 etc....
The are both available from the sight whores in the gunlist and at many gun shows...
