7-08 custom rifle
I am planning of let a gunsmith build me a 7-08 custom rifle, for target shooting at 300 meters.
(no benchrest rifle 'cause this I cannot afford).
So, no hunting either... only targets.

What's the most important to tell my gunsmith I want to have for this this purpose ?
(I want to compare your answers with his answers)

It would help if you mentioned what kind of targets and positions you will be using. Weight limit on rifle, with or without scope, trigger pull restrictions, etc.

Sorry, I know this was a 'wide-open' question.

- weight limit : not very important, it's not for hunting, just use a bipod and I am ready.
- With scope
- Lying on the ground (shooting range)
- Targets : the usual paper targets, it's for 'relaxed' targetshooting, not moving (not allowed in my country) at 300 meters.
- Bolt-action

But must be able to shoot 20 rounds without an overheated barrel, detachable magazinebox (5 rounds). Now I have a perfect .222R but for the 300 meter range, it's a bit underpowered.

I'd suggest a blueprinted Winchester 70 or a Remington 700 with a stripper clip slot instead of a detachable mag. Of course if you wish to the spend $200 to $300 more you can go with a custom action like a Nesika or Stolle. As for a barrel I would suggest a medium Palma contour from any of the well known barrel makers.
By far the most important choice of straight prone shooting will be the stock. Most stocks are designed for standing and sitting and don't have the best comb and butt placement for prone shooting. I would suggest something with a vertical grip, straight forend, adjustable cheekpiece, and a 3 way adjustable butt. Take a look at the McMillan Prone stock, I have used it in comparison with my classic stock and found it ten times more comfortable.

Here's what I would do...
Read up on the metallic sill shooters, as that's why remington commericalized that old wildcat, and look at their configs.

the m700 in 708 is about perfect, with a proper stock. Put a shilen or jewell trigger in it,
have fun

This is one of the routes I went, with my various 7-08's and it works nicely for banging stuff at a distance.

Rem 700 short action blueprinted and in ADL configuration w/steel TG,McMillan A2 stock,Lilja 1-10" S/S tube 22 inches in length. Throating geometry is sane and allows pretty good leeway in the projectile spectrum that interests me.

I wanted a well balanced and fairly compact rifle, that would do most everything well and in repeater configuration . All in all,I feel I hit it on the head. The rifle shoots beyond my high expectations, does so with very modest recoil and is a hell of a lot of fun in general(typical 7-08 performance characteristics).

Scope is a Leupie 12x w/turrets in Leupie DD's and extended front base.

Food for thought................

Mmmmm..

I actually assembled it out of stuff I had laying around.

1) Donor Rem 700 action is $350-ish
2) Barrel was $200-ish
3) Action work/barrel threading,chambering,Teflon coated action,etc.,about $200-ish (I get a pretty good deal on that stuff,as I'm a "Frequent Flyer")
4) Did good on the stock,it was off of McMillan's Internet Specials list. Was only $300 to my doorstep.
5) Bases/rings about $50-ish
6) Scope was $250-ish

So I guess after all the freighting of parts and associated BS,it was about $1350-ish. For what those funds realized,I consider it to be a hell of a good deal,as the proof is in the pudding.

She delivers...................
