8x57 Guild Pics
Here are some pics finally of the little gew amburg mauser guild rifle 8x57.Any info or input on this old rifle is greatly appreciated.I really would like to know what you guys think the stock is made out of.The finish looks like linseed and is spotty and thick and gone in places. The checkering is awsome and the little rifle handles and points super.Would you leave this rifle as is or change a few things?Refinish?Etc.
Check out the squarebolt handle and Flip up iron sight.Classic stock layout.
I plan on useing the rifle with the irons and hunting deer/bear/hogs/varmints.I have some brass & sierra 175gr.sp to try out & will try the 195gr.hornadys later. The irons are hitting dead on at 75yards with PMC 170gr.Factory ammo.
The butt plate is worn out and made of rubber/ugly and the grip cap is made of bakelite...I think i will change those! The trigger is pretty good for a original and i love the safety, they will stay for now.Anyway iam proud of it and just wanted to share ..for all you guys that love old mausers....Its my first one! :thumb

If that's your first one then it's time for congratulations. cheers

It's a hellovalot better than my first one for sure.

As a matter of constructive criticism may I suggest you get new guard screws ($5.00 from Brownells) and tig shut the locking screw holes and remachine the pockets and install the new guard screws.

The stock appears to be black walnut but difficult to tell....it's actually quite nice on this gun.

Yes....I do like the bolt handle as well.....as long as there's no scope that bolt handle is a classy sight.

Sincerely....this is a very good effort!

Would you refinish this stock/rifle or leave for hunting as is?

As a hunting gun, I'd use it as is....but it's your gun....do your own thing here.

Nice score. A good looking rifle with some history in a great caliber.

Personally, I wouldn't weld up the locking screw holes. You'd then have to blue the guard. Instead, I'd just get a new set of screws including the locking screws. I weld up all the holes on rifles I build but since this was "made" like that I'd leave it as-is.
