Do strange things happen tragectory wise when shooting over expanses of water?
I've had two instances now where I have spotted a boar lying in the mud on the far side of a particular billabong. On both occasions I've been able to assume an almost benchrest solid position and both times the first 2 shots have missed (over the top) and the boars have not budged. I then thought "bugger it I'll aim low" and both times the boars have rolled over kicking. By low I mean about 18"!
The range was about 150m, the first time using an 8x57 with 180 gn Ballistic Tips and the second using a .270 with 130 gn Hornady's.
What is going on here? It is extremely hot where I hunt so could it be that the presumably cooler air over the water is affecting tragectory- or am I just a crap shot!!!???

I think open water affects your estimate of distance quite a bit. Similar to hunting on absolute flat land with no other referance points.

Quite often it looks closer to the other side than it really is kind of an optical illusion.
