WoodhitsDrilling for Grip caps & recoil pads
I'm working on my first semi-inlet (I've refinished some stocks but have never done a new one) and have a few questions.
I understand the finer points of fitting the grip cap and recoil pad- plenty of reference material out there on the subject. The part that makes me nervous is the drilling and tapping of the screw holes. My only reference for this procedure is the mention on the "Scholarship Rifle CD".
Take for example the Dakota 2-screw grip cap, how do I determine the correct size hole to drill and which tap to use? I don't want to split the blank, over-drill the holes, etc. I'm pretty handy but there's a first time for everything.
Indexing the screws will be a whole other story...
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Jim KobeFor what it is worth, I measure the minor diameter of the screw, rough measure at that, with a dial caliper and drill. Put some beeswax on the screw when you thread it in.
