Pre 64 Hornet
I believe the Win M70 uses one action size which will handle anything from a 22 Hornet up. Can I have Winchester build me a 6.5x54MS ? I know case diameters differ cosiderably. What if any
modifications would be necessary to get this done?

Thanks

I don't believe Wichester has a custom shop at the present time. I'm sure there are some smiths here that could fullfill your desire.

I do hope you are not thinking of taking a hornet and turning it into something else!

If that be the case, I will swap actiosns with you and do the work for nothing except maybe you buy the barrel.

Not at all I wont be converting a Hornet just looking for a suitable action for a rifle I am hoping to have built some day but dont really understand case and base rim diameters and how a standard size action can be made to use a cartridge with a smaller than .473 rim diameter. I am a shotgun man mainly so I am a tad ignorant when it comes to rifle action modifications. I have always wanted a 6.5x54 MS and want one built on a Mauser type action. A Sako 85 would also be nice Wink

The pre-'64 model 70 was not made with a smaller than .473 bolt face, the post '64 push feed was.

Jim I realise that but how is the M70 able to handle such a wide variety of calibers with different dimensions if the action only comes in one length? Please pardon my stupidity homer

Jim: Actually, my pre 64 Hornet has a .370 (+-) bolt face...perhaps you meant something else?

Why a mauser?

A 6,5*55 or 6,5*57 would by easyer on a mauser.

6,5*54 fit the nice mannlicher.

Actually, once again, you are correct.

Keep your eyes open. I believe there are M70's in 6.5x55 out there. I have seen several feather weights. However these are new M70's, not pre-64's.
