<Jim Lawrence>Remington action
Hello: I'm looking to buy a Remington M700 action to build a deer rifle from. I have never shopped for a rifle online and certainly not just an action. Can anyone give me a suggestion as to where I might start searching for this item. Any help is very greatly appreciated. Good luck to everyone. Jim Lawrence

<DuaneinND>I generally find it easier to buy a new rifle, tear it apart and sell the factory barrel and stock.

<Gary Rihn>Duane nailed this one. Wait for Wal-Mart to have a sale, or cruise pawn shops for a used one, buy it, strip it, & you got your action. Remington will only sell a barrelled action, costs more than a whole rifle, & what's the point if you want to build a custom (rebarrel) anyway?

MacD37Just wait for Wally-world to have a sale usually they have one in early October! You can buy a whole Mod 700 rifle cheaper that the price of a good action, brand new, and already in a chambering that is fine for deer!

<sormi>Jim,
I would do the Wal-Mart buy too. You can pick up a Rem 700 in 30-06 or 270 for around $350.00. Buying from Wal-Mart saves you from paying shipping and FFL transfers.
Heck most Reminton's shoot fine right out of the box. No need to throw 100's into a custom rifle. You are not in any contest with it, you are just going to shoot a deer.. Now there is the ADL with a plastic stock and the BDL with a wood stock. I like the light weight plastic stock. If you walk around a lot you would like it too.

Matt NormanI think what you will find is many other people are watching for these actions to appear in Gun List, Guns America, Gun Broker, Auction Arms, etc. Because of demand bargains are few and far between, too many "gun guys" such as ourselves who have some kind of a project rifle utilizing this action in the works. Unless you have something special in mind, building a "deer rifle" via this route is akin to a rectal tonsillectomy. (But then, when have the rest of us let practicality stand in the way of a good "project rifle"?) -MN

<PrimeTime>Go to
www.varminthunters.com and look at the classifieds. Basically, you are going to pay between 300 and 400 for a 700 action.

SheisterJim, I usually find donor actions on rifles at the gun shows and you're in luck- there is a big gun show in Portland this weekend.
What are you planning on building? You will have to decide which action you will need before you start your search, long action, short action, magnum, stainless, etc... The last action I bought at the Portland show was a complete Rem.700 300 Win mag that was in good shape for $275. The barrel is a little pitted on the outside (pristine on the inside) but the action is in mint condition. If you look, the bargains are there, but you have to be patient and be willing to haggle a bit with most of these guys. If you need any more info, drop me an e-mail- I'm in Hillsboro.- Sheister
