cure for long-throat Remingtons?
I'm new here, but have read a lot of comments about the throats of Remingtons be absurdly long. Can't that be "easily" cured by setting the barrel back one turn and rechambering for whatever throat preferred? (and what would be an optimal throat length if all it were fed was 175g & 168g loads?) What would something like that possibly cost? I'm interested as I am picking up a new 700 in .308 with the 5-R SS barrel, and would consider having it done.

5-R,

Welcome to the forum.

Before you think of having this done to your new rifle, why don't you shoot it and see how well it shoots?

We've had quite a number of factory Remingtons that shoot extremely well, especially after the bedding and trigger is taken care of.

Thanks Saeed, I do plan on seeing if it's actaully a problem before I ponder any changes. but if it does appear to cause difficulties...how is that dealt with?

Best paln is to get a new barrel. You could set it back a couple of threads and rechamber. The cost of doing that is not worth it unless you do the work yourself. Maybe two or three hours shop time??? If you set it back it will not fit the stock properly. Hmmm, why not get a new long chambered barrel from Pac-Nor and have it installed in a fraction of the time? Put your money in a quality barrel not a smith's time to re-work crappy barrel and end upp with a rifle that looks jury rigged. The second option gives you a superior barrel for simillar cost.
