Battered hammer gun firing pin
I picked up an old cape gun, 303 x 12 bore. It will be a long term rehab project. One thing I just noticed is the 303 barrel firing pin is quite battered. I measure .085 protrustion from the breech face. Any special tips in smoothing and re-rounding the pin. Does it need to be hardened? Does the .085 protrusion give me enough material to work with to smooth the pin? Thanks, Bob

I think most "moderns" would settle on something between .055-065 for firing pin protrusion. Looks like you have plenty of room.

Of course, diameter is also a factor

You might want the pins hardened where the hammer falls, but not the tips.

Bob, call me. Maybe we can fix it at the shop?
