A friend dropped off a Mauser for me to clean and I don't know what kind it is. It was brought back from ww2 by the guys uncle and sporterized in the late 60's early 70' in Okinawa I believe. It seems to be a small ring M-98. The bolt is a 98 bolt, cock on opening, third safety lug, wing safety, etc. The only marking on the gun is Kax. or Rax. 98. There is no caliber stamped on the bbl and under the action in no particular order are, D, K, 4, and a cursive X, also several others that I can't read. Any clues as to what action this is?

Sounds like a Kar98, it was made in WW1 as a lighweight carbine. I have won with a featherweight .257 Robert's barrel, it made a very nice light rifle. They have large ring threads on the barrel, and aren't recommended for high pressure rounds.

It is actualy a german kaz carbine from WWI. It is posible that it was bought back from WWII as the nazi's rework a larg number of older firearms into the K98K patern.

My mistake, it was WWI not II. How does this differ from the lightweight vz33 or g 33/40?

The vz 33 was a standard 98 action with some metal removed to liten the action. the 33/40 was a occupation model with german additions.

the G33/40 is a true small ring action..The others mentioned are L.R.Mausers, if I read the post correctly..
