Thunder childWhat solvent works best on loctite?
I'm changing bases and would like to find out what works best in removing old loctite from the screw holes in the action? Thanks in advance for the info.

Alex SzaboThunderchild,
First welcome aboard! Any compond that is comprised of Dipropolyne Glycol Methyl Ether (i.e. PB by B'laster/B.C.C.I.).
It breaks the Red & Blue loctites without any adverse affect on the surrounding metals (i.e. aluminum, steel etc).
After soaking these components in this stuff upon removal, the dried compond is removed from the threads without any incident.

CustomstoxPut the tip of an electric soldering rod on the screws, heat them up and turn them out.

shortshotAll loctites liquify at 300 degrees and it is the abscense of air that makes them solidify.

AtkinsonI have a very small propane torch, that can be purchased at any bakery products store..It is made for carmelizing suger in a spoon..I can heat a screw with the gun in its stock with that small directed flame and have a glassed in screw out in seconds without heating the action rings...It starts with the push of a trigger, much like a cigerette lighter...No gunsmith or gun tinkerer should be without one.

aHunterAlex, is this MEK ( Methyl-Ethyl-Keton )?
Does it harm the blueing?
I understand about the initial loosening of the screws, Im also interested in removing Loctite completely.
Thanks, Hermann

John Y CannuckI always just ran a tap through the holes. Cleans it out perfect, and straightens out any bent threads while at it.
No damage to blueing, no residual loctite in the thread. Be sure to catch the loctite dust.
