Why??
Bill

I don't understand the reasons for your hole placement statement.

First, I am strictly an amature, working on only my own guns. I have several military mausers, and one commercial mauser built in Austria and imported by Flaigs. All have the rear screw hole of the front site base in the recess for the lug. The lug base begins about 1/4 from the rear of the front ring.

Placement of a hole closer to the rear would result in a blind hole and the front base extending over the action opening. I have never seen this, and can not understand anyone doing this unless they had special bases trying to mount a compact scope without extension rings.

Would this cause a safety concern or just look terrible?

Sorry

Putting the hole in the recess is one thing. Putting it in the face of the lug is another.

I think we are confused by terms. The recess in the action, where the bolt lug goes, is the proper location.

Wrong location is in the lug abutment in the rreceiver, the "Thick" place.
