Rem 700 Question
Hi,

I want to rebarrel my Rem 700 223 to a 22-250. Is a barrel swap the only consideration? Will the original bolt work? Thanks

YES and NO....the bolt face will have to be opened up and a new extractor fitted such as the Sako type.....the recess for the rim are different and you might want to get the action detailed/trued as part of the procedure or just trade guns for a 22-250-30-06/bolt face action.....if you want a custom barrel....good luck and good shooting!!

Besides boltface mods, you'll require a new mag box and follower,as well.

Nowwww,if'n you wanna swap for a .473" boltface(22-250 ready) short action 700,I might could help you right out(grin)..................

You'll have to open up the feed rails in the action also.I think .378 bolt Remingtons should be left as is.It's hard to find a used one.Get one with a .473 face and it's a simple rebarrel.

This brings up an interesting question: aren't bolts available for the 700 from Remington or somebody? If not, why not? What actions can you get bolts for?

Switching bolts is not recommend since the barrel is headspaced with the current bolt, simply swapping one out can cause major headspace problems.

I think swapping a 223 bolt for a 22-250 bolt would be OK since you plan on having your barrel either rechambered or replaced to a 22-250 chamber, which would require the gunsmith to headspace anyway.
