Looking at the dimensions from Steve's pages the 7x57 neck is a larger Dia than the 7-08. So to keep from having a ridge on the neck you would need to set the barrel back about .5". Maybe half that if you open the 7-08 neck up to match the 7x57.

It might cost you $30-40 just to find out what the job would cost.

You will have to set the barrel back to reposition the shoulder for the '08 case. You may have to go back further to remove, or, you might be able to utilize the existing neck, based on the actual neck diameter of that chamber versus the actual 7mm 08 reamer that will be used, and, depending on the action you are screwing it to, and if there are sights involved, you may need aditional machine work.

So yeah, it could cost you somewhere between $150.00 and $300.00, but, spending an initial $30-40 for a chamber cast should help clear things up.

Both you and Westpac are on the money, in my eyes. Depending on the make and exterior finish of the new barrel, and who does how much of the work, it might not be too much more expensive to just rebarrel...maybe $150-$175 more.

The potential dvantages are:

- You'd fairly well know what quality barrel you have.

- You'd have a barrel-life expectation the same as any new barrel or new rifle.

- You wouldn't have to worry about neck diameter/ & length issues. Castings can be a bit tricky for the relatively inexperienced to read 100% accurately...both because castings do expand over "X" hours after they are made, and because some 'smiths are not fastidious in making sure there will be 100% clean-up of the old neck.

Even an almost immeasurable difference where the new neck is smaller diameter than the old one can result in a visible difference "showing" on the necks of the fired brass. It may be no operational problem, but it might bug you to see.

I am a big fan of the 7mm08 but it may be easier to just rebarrel to a 7mm08 and then you have two rifles in one. If you get bored with one switch barrels.

It's a put your money where your mouth is kina thing. All the folks who use the upside down argument for CRF have no clue. It's kind of a stupid idea any way. Don't get me wrong I'm a big fan of CRF. But the whole upside down thing is funny.
