Izhmash 9x54R Medved availability
I have contacted Izhmash to obtain information on possible import of a number of their "Medved" rifles in the 9x54 m/m Rimmed chambering. Would anyone other than me be interested in what they say if I do get a response?

Try to look unimportant. Your enemy might be low on ammo.

Alberta Canuck,

I am definitely interested. Please let me know what you hear from them. Thanks in advance.

Good hunting!

They have already responded, and so far it is positive! We'll see how things go and I'll keep you guys posted here as things become more clear and specifics become available....

To see one, go here:

Alberta Canuck,

Didn't see any 9x54R there. Over here, the 9.3x64 may be a better choice because of ammunition availability, I guess. But they still wouldn't be the old Medveds. Frowner

I'll try and call my old friend in Moscow to find out if he could help with any information he may have. Give me a day or two and I'll post the information here when I have it.

The 9x56 is not listed on that web-site, but then neither are their single-shot and double rifles.

I posted this site so folks could see what the Medved rifle looks like, as it looks the same whether in .223, .308, 7.62x54R, or 9x54R. The Tigr, which is the 9.3x64 Brenneke-chambered model, is slightly different and, to my view, not quite as nice looking.

Personally, I do not consider the 9.3 x 64 to be the better choice for my partciular use. If I happened to be a guide in the brown bear areas of Alaska, I probably would prefer the 9.3 x 64, but for all around hunting use and enjoyable shooting in the areas I frequent, I need neither the recoil nor the cost of the larger, more powerful 9.3 ammo.

It is certainly less elegant - rather, call it rugged and utilitarian. Smiler
But it handles and points extremely well, and the straight thumbhole stock is superb for recoil absorption, as I can testify.

The ammo is cheap enough nowadays, too (Barnaul and LVE).

Thanks for the ammo info Carcano. I did not realize Barnaul was loading it. I haven't seen any 9.3x64 by Barnaul here in the 'States yet. But then, I haven't been looking for it either. It may well be quite available and reasonably priced now here too, I just haven't seen it yet.
