Re: Shooting a 270 in a 7mag
I once fired a 7-08 in a 308 win chamber before I realized what I had done. It opened the neck up to 308 and I couldn't figure out why I couldn't get on paper. Both model 7s are identacle except for chamber. thought I had the 7-08 while I shooting the 308. Looking at the case I thought I had the model 7 in 7-08 until I noticed that the neck was bigger than the 7-08 ammo. I looked around to see if anybody was watching.

I would GUESS that there isn't any damage to the receiver or barrel, but stock repair aside, it warrants a thorough exam by a competent 'smith.

I have also done this before. Well a 280 in a 7mm mag. It was a m700 though. It broke the extractor and bowed the floor plate a little. This gun still shoots groups.
Have it looked at by a smith but I would bet that all is ok. It doesnt surprise me that the stock cracked. Lots of gas trying to go somewhere it shouldnt.

Not quite the same but close enough:

A friend fired a .30-30 shell in a .308 Mauser I built for him. He never even knew what was wrong until I pointed out the headstamp to him. He turned bright red. Afterward, he said he did recall that particular round being rather more difficult to chamber. Hmmm, that ought to be a warning. Both shooter and rifle escaped unharmed. Underwear not so lucky.

I've had two rifles brought into my shop with a 270 fired in a 7mm Rem Mag chamber.

The first was an old Remington 700 BDL. It blowed the floor plate open and bent it. Melted the case head into the bolt face recess. Bent the extractor. Gas leakage eroded a small area of the chamber mouth. I replaced the parts and advised the customer we should set the barrel back and rechamber. The customer elected not to rechamber and as far as I know he is probably still firing the rifle.

The second was a Ruger MK II. These rifles are tough and strong. It blowed the floor plate open and bent it too. Compressed the follower spring. Split the stock into 4 pieces. Scared the bejeebers out of a couple of teenagers. I replaced the stock and parts, headspace and chamber was normal. The rifle is back in service. Nothing else messed up except the two boys pants and dad's checking balance.

Another gunsmith friend of mine had a Ruger No 1 brought in with a case stuck in the chamber. When he removed the case he determined they had fired a .308 in a 25-06 chamber. Some how the bullet made it out the barrel. He cleaned up the chamber and breech block and headspace checked out normal. The rifle is still in service. I told you those Rugers were strong!

That would not have happened if he was using a CRF action, at least according to all the CRF fans...

I was helping a friend sight in his 257 Wby Alaskan and his Browning 300 Win mag when he put in a 257 Wby shell in his Win mag and it sounded like a 22 when he fired it. No damage to the gun, just split the neck on the Wby brass.

Well picked up the Mod 70 this morning. It appears to be a pre 64 in 7mm mag. Must have been made in 62-64 since I think the 7mag came out in 1962. Quick look shows no metal damage except maybe just a slight bow in the floor plate. Stock cracked behind the recoil lug in front of the trigger and just a little inside in front of the recoil lug. I will place some screw material and glass across the cracks and rebed it in glass check the headspace and a little deeper visual check.
