Stock for Mark X 375 H&H

Just made room in the safe for a Mark X 375 H&H, but the "hogback" stock has to go (needs too much work to make it fit anyway}. For my style of hunting, I'm thinking I need a synthetic stock that will be relatively light, tough, won't swell, and might help out some with recoil. Without going "custom", which synthetic stocks would you recommend for this rifle?

I know there are quite a few aftermarket stocks out there, but from reading here and elsewhere I'm somewhat concerned about fitting them to the 375 action and barrel countour. I'm led to believe that this action has been modified somewhat to feed and chamber the 375 H&H. How much fitting needs to be done on the various stocks and (if necessary) can they be inletted enough without breaking through the outer shell? Any advice on this would be appreciated.

As far as design, the factory supplied (H-S?) stocks that came on some Rem. 700s fit the best of the synthetic stocks I have used. Is there a similar design that would adapt to the Mark X?

Harry - Thanks for the response. I looked at the McMillan web site. Their stocks look great and since they fit them to the rifle I know the stock would fit. What doesn't seem quite right is that the stock would cost quite a bit more than the rifle (and Leupold scope) did. Just want to know my options.

I know there are several aftermarket stocks advertised for the Mark X action (Bell & Carlson, Hogue, McMillan, etc.), but I have read threads suggesting they won't all work for a 375 H&H. I don't mind fitting a stock myself and have done a few bedding and fitting jobs on other actions. I just wondered what folks with more experience with the Mark X action in 375 might have to say. Maybe I can avoid buying something that can't work.

Of course. if there is no other option I'd probably go for a McMillan.

Ratltrap: You need one that is specifically made for the MK X magnum action with the correct barrel channel. I have stocked one in a Bell & Carlson; it was made for the 375 H&H.

JD - What is the model # on the B&C stock you have? The B&C website lists two models for the Mark X - one for the "mini mauser" and one for the long action. Nothing about a magnum action. Would like to know what model you are using before I call them.

MKX only made one length action. The short action had a magaize block in the back. The normal and the 375 had a longer magazine box. Lengthened in the front with the feed ramp altered to accept the longer 375 round. Any MKX (non-mini) stock will work just fine.

The B&C stock made for the 375 H&H has a metal insert behind the recoil lug similar to a crossbolt. The barrel channel is also made for the 375.

Are you looking specifically for a synthetic stock? I have a nice Mark X Whitworth Express stock laying around. It takes the standard length 98 action and is designed to accomodate the .375 H&H length triggerguard. If you're interested, give me a holler.
