cleaning up the front ring on a mauser
Kevin you have the holy grail in your hands already, that G33/40 is the perfect platform.
If the barrel is good then use it too.
Go for it!

2152hqEither action would make a great sporter.
I'd use the Peruvian just cause I like the high rear bridge feature.
Stop fretting over the pitting on the front ring.
Polish the front ring as well as can be done,,remove the Crest and square it up.
Any remaining pitting from that patch can be gone by matting the top of the front ring as many Mauser sporters were done up.
Or a scope mount base made with bigger footprint as they say now to cover up more of the top including any left over pitting.
The base can be nicely shaped w/ a scalloped or beveled edge to trim it up so it doesn't have the large block look.
Or sell it to me (seriously) and I'll gladly make a rifle out of it and you can concentrate on that nice G.33-40!

Duane, some of your stuff is just wonderful. Funny!
I am wondering what you have to say about the folks that used to cut about an inch from Mauser Actions and bolts and then WELD to make .250 Savage length actions. I know that your buddy Jim Carmichael had one that was done by Ron Lampert and Jim spoke highly of it in some of his printed articles.

More brochure. Notice the "reasonable prices. $20.00 per hour!!!!
As long as the ring is protected from excessive heat, shortening an action can make a spiffy outfit. My website shows such a project
