Marlin 336 RC Barrel Replacement
I got what I thought was a good deal on a Marlin 336RC (30-30, 16.5" bbl) at a gun show. When I got it home and shot it, I discovered the chamber is ringed, by about .008", and brass is very hard to extract as a result.

Seems to me that it will need a new barrel. I've never rebarreled anything except Mausers, and I'd like some advice before I buy another one from GPC. Are the new Marlin barrels "short chambered," and will I need to get a reamer? Are the dovetails for the magazine tube and sights already cut? I don't have a lathe or mill, so anything I can't do with a file and dremel will probably mean the gun won't get fixed.

Thanks for any advice!

Make a phone call to Marlin. I remember some one reporting that Marlin will rebarrel you rifle for a very reasonable fee.

It may have been on this forum, do a search, seems like it was under $200.00.

Craftsman is correct. I got one of the "Short Ported" 444Mar rifles in a trade last year and figured it would be too loud for me. Called Marlin and they said all I had to do was mail it to them with a check for $140 and they would replace the barrel with the long one and mail it back.

If you find a BETTER DEAL than that anywhere, be sure to let everyone know.

P.S. The barrel wasn't as loud as I thought it would be and I still have the Short Ported one.

Just want to second Marlins excellent customer service. I've called a few times looking for screws and they send them out no charge. If you need to talk to a gunsmith, no problem.

Excellent advice, guys! I appreciate you taking time to help me out.

I'll give Marlin a call next week to see what they can do for me.

Thanks again!
