50 BMG barrel conversion.
Can anybody tell me if it possible to convert a 50BMG barrel into, for instance,50 Peacekeeper,or 495 A Square or the like.
I am talking about an original military MG barrel. Thanks! P.s.if the barrel is suitable I can do the contouring (profile) myself, not the chambering.
Hugh.

hd352802,
Sure, this can be done, but you have to be careful of the quality. I picked one up at the Knobcreek show once and looked through it. I thought I was seeing cosmoline in the bore, a new barrel I was told. I took it home and cleaned it and there were areas of the bore which were just plain ragged. I took it back for a refund the next day, lucky I could. Some of those "new" M2HB's are surplus as rejects I reckon.

Do not buy one without properly inspecting the bore. I believe they are 1 in 15" twist and 45" long. A lot of work to turn one down, and unlikely to be as accurate as a custom barrel of whatever twist you want.

BTW, both I and SSK seem to think that 1 in 10" is the proper twist for a 510/460 Long class rifle.

RAB,thank you for answering, now I am confident:if I meet the guy who owns the brandnew 50 BMG barrel again,it won't be to difficult to find him again,I'll buy the barrel.Thanks.

I don't know the price of the surplus barrel you have a lead on, but Lothar-Walther is coming out with a new SSteel barrel in 50cal that is a 1:10" twist, 28" long and 1.25" blank for a good price. If you are going to go to the trouble of making the firearm, it would be wise to get a barrel that is a shooter.

BMG,
Now Harry McGowen is not the only one making a stainless 1 in 10" twist .510 barrel.

You gotta love competetion. It brings forth a greater degree of variety and improvements.
Woody at Lothar-Walther said that the barrels should be ready for shipment (with my requested contour) in 3 weeks. Then Kevin will have all the parts for my baby. Now all I need to get dies, brass, shell holder, trim pilot, etc, etc...
