Im going to be starting an 300 H&H build in about 1 week. Im going to be getting an #4 countor barrel, express sights, action and stock. I dont know what to go with. I was thinking about a 1903 or mauser. FOr the barrel a shilen #4 contour and for sights NECG expess 3 leaf sights. A stock from www.gunstocks.com

I dont know for sure, but I think a 300 H&H on a 1903 would be very difficult and expensive to do. But it would be really classy!!!! You would have a very difficult time with the bottom metal, not to mention opening it up for the longer cartridge.

A Mauser would be a much better choice in my opinion. A nice 1909 Argie. would be a good choice to start with. The nice thing about using a Mauser is that you have so many options open to you. Blackburn makes bottom metal for the Mauser that is properly set up for the 300 H&H.

I do have to ask though why you are going with a #4 Shilen. That is a real beefy and heavy contour.

I feel the 1909 mausers and similar make for an awsome looking classic gun.........................but there bloody expensive and not practical in many respects.

Here is a WIP of my own 1909 .404 project and I reckon this would suit a "classic styled".300 H&H as well.

The same thing jumped out at me too. Even a #3 Shilen would be plenty heavy. (My current Whelen has a #3 Shilen and it is plenty of barrel even in 35 caliber...)

I'd go with a Pac-Nor #2 CM - just a touch lighter than a #3 Shilen but still plenty stout for a 25-26" barrelled 300 H&H.

How about adding a Tally barrel band?

Adam, you can start with a lot better stock design than one from GAG.

If you are looking for advice, there are some informed folks that can offer it. You might best be served by listening to them. Use an action that is suited to the caliber and a barrel that will form a functional rifle.

PC great looking rifle, good job. THAT action fits the round, some feed work needs to be done but it will work.

I really like the .300 H&H and a 1903 so chambered would be a slick rig. But as M1Tanker stated, probably expensive. I also like some of the mausers converted to the .300 H&H as well. Again this can get expensive for a proper conversion. But for me the classic action for a .300 H&H is a CRF Winchester M70. Especially a pre-war M70. Either action will work when properly set up but the M70 is just my personal preference.

When you say "I am going to be starting an . . . . ", does that mean you are going to be doing the work, or does that mean you are going to be the general contractor and you are going to subcontract out all of the work?

MOreover, you didn't say what your budget is.

Both of those little details make a big difference as to what advice people would be able to give you concerning your project.

IM going to try to do some of the work but prolly have to contract some of it out. My budget for an action would be under 500, it is a 300 H&H. If it was a 404 or larger then id go more expensive. Prolly 500 for the stock and 700 for the rest of the parts.

Adam,that looks exactly like my rem varmint 308 with laminated stock.

When I had mine built I went with a Shilen#3 contour and if I had it to do all over again, I would go with a #2. On the action, I really like mausers, but I would save myself a lot of trouble and get a Winchester.
