Caliber changes on a Savage
My final goal is a sporter weight 1:9 twist 220 Swift. I've decided to go new, cheap, and ugly. My question is the best path to get there:

1) Buy a .223REM complete rifle, ream the barrel to 220 Swift and change the bolt head and magazine. I have the reamer in hand, FWIW.

2) Buy any short action with a .473 bolt and install a custom barrel.

3) Other suggestions...

Thanks!

Since you have the reamer already it will be cheaper to convert your Savage 223 over.

I don't have a Savage project going now, but I have been wondering how deep to ream a Savage barrel. The way the barrel nut adjusts headspace, it seems you have some leeway, but what is correct? Do you figure a certain distance from the barrel to bolt head?

Also, I vote buy a new rifle, because more guns is always better.
