Still don't like Claro????Check this out!
The Brown truck brought these to the house today.

The one on the left is an English Walnut blank I bought from ElCaballero. It's very nice, but a sprig knot was uncovered while turning it. Oh well, these things happen. Otherwise it's a stunning piece of wood.

The one in the middle was the pattern.

Now....drum roll please! The one on the right is a piece of Claro Walnut and it's absolutely beautiful! If this was a woman it would be XXX rated cheers

I'll get a few more up after my picture hosting service is back.

The stock is gorgeous, but the pattern is real pleasing to the eye too. What is that pattern? What actions will it accomodate. Is your pattern stock for rent?! I am thinking that pattern would look real nice on an HVA commercial mauser I have.

Thanks,

The pattern is off an old guild rifle. The owner had an extra pattern for me and I added the cheek piece and a few smaller details. The deal was he gets the pattern back when I'm finished. I'll talk to him and see what he say's, but it's not really mine.

Terry, that is stunning. Claro is one of the wildest looking Neon Sign woods out there. My dislike is more out of workability or lack of. The grain has always been very dramatic.

Brianbo, Claro is also known as California Black.

Well, I've never worked with a piece, but neon sign wood really sums it up. Maybe not for everyone but I like this one.

Very nice Terry! You done good!

I can't wait to see the metal in them. I think the Claro will look really good when assembled. What are you going to put in it?

Beautiful piece of Claro. As long as it is dense and tight pored, I got no problem with it. I've owned some Turkish and California English that were soft as balsa.

I have several very nice stocks out of Claro.....nothing unattractive about it at all. Much of it is lighter weight and don't checker well in very fine lines......say finer than 22 LPI.

I personally like course chechering of 16-18 LPI so Claro is really nice for calibers like 25-06, 6.5 X 55 and other light recoiling rifles.

That one is absolutely great.....but a lot of fabulous Claro stocks are available.....just shell out the cash!!!!

Over on the small bore rifle thread there is a picture of my custom spring field, it was posted under the picture posted for tj270win, it is an unusual piece of clario looks like maple to some but the picture makes it look more blond than it is, i would love to hear you opinion. Its not as nice as some of this stuff but I rather like it. ...tj3006

Does your friend carve/profile stocks? I have a nice blank and I really like the looks of that pattern for a small ring HVA Mauser.

that is a very nice piece of Claro, the guy I get my wood from calls claro black.

I've never made a stock from Claro, but I have a nice piece, best I can tell it's pretty hard and dense. I typicaly build big bores and have never used claro.

The price is right on some of it too. I if I could find one like in the pic, thats a real nice pice, looks like it was done on a nice pattern too.

That would clash with the electric green scope! Don’t you know anything?

Nice piece of claro!

Here's the last claro I used - rifle is a LH Remington 700 in .300 H&H with 60% coverage engraving.

And here's a shot of it taken just before it was sent off a few months ago to get checkered (still not back yet sadly).

that is a nice piece of Claro, but I still prefer English. I just like it better. I have soem Claro like you show, and had more and got rid of it a few years ago. I also prefer red headed women. Women and stock blanks are a very persoanl thing, and I will stick with English and the reds!

Also, if you work much from the blank, I promise you will like ENglish better. Scraping barrel channels for full cotnact on CLaro with all of that fiddle drives me crazy! Chiseling, carving, rasping, scraping, spotting in, drawknifing, and hacketing (yes, I use a tomahwak on stock blanks) has been easier and far more enjoyable fo rme with English than any Claro. I have never seen Claro that was not "chippier" and "flakier" than English.

Again, I am not taking anything at all away from this blank. I like it as far as Claro goes. I have had girlfriends (and even an ex-wife) who were not redheads, but man, I sure do prefer the reds!!! Unlike English, wich has always been easier for me to work than CLaro, redheads are usually more difficult to deal with. Different strokes for different folks

My safe will continue to have the majority of rifles stocked in English. This wasn't meant to be a comparison of the two.

Terry, that stock will hold it's own in any comparison. I have seen Claro that is dense and hard and holds fine checkering. I have rarely seen any that looked better than that one.
