One of my partners has picked up a Ruger #1 with custom wood and checkering, but wants to have it re-barreled and accurized.

Who specializes in these rifles?

I just noticed an ad that Hill Country Rifle Company is running for accurizing rifles. $325-$350. These guys are out of New Braunfels, TX and their number is 830-609-3139. I have never traded with these folks, but they certainly have what seems to be a solid reputation. www.hillcountryrifles.com
I have a restocked #1 in 25 .06 that I just got back from the guys at American Gunstock in CA. Scoped it yesterday and if the rain stops today, I'm headed out see what it can do. I have spoken with a couple of gunsmiths here in Portland who have expressed that the lack of accuracy in a #1 is usually more related to the tie-in with the forearm than the barrel. Both guys felt that with some patience and tweaking, one can likely improve the accuracy of the rifle. They also indicated that if you were to go to the trouble to rebarrel the rifle, you would want to re-engineer the fastening system (lug on the barrel versus the typical Ruger system) - which might render that nice custom stock that you have obsolete.
All that said - I am an absolute novice on this issue and I'm certain that there are many other folks who contribute to the forum that might provide much better counsel to you.

I'm having a Ruger #3 (about the same as a #1) re-barreled/accurized by E.A. Brown (search EABCO for link). Don't have the rifle yet so can't evaluate but take a look at the website for more info. Also, search web for "Ruger #1"...there are several smith's that specialize in #1's and other single shots.

I have worked on a couple that Mark Penrod did the metal on. He does very nice work.

I don't know what experience Jim Dubell has with #1's, but the metalwork I have seen is top flight as well.

Give David Christman a try. He reattaches the forearm to the barrel. He is by no means the only guy who does this, but when he is through it will shoot. I don�t think you would have to worry about the custom forearm either. He sometimes hunts with a #1 in 7mm STW that shoots little bug holes. It�s not the only one I have seen him work wonders with either.

I'll second Roger's mention of Mark Penrod. There are lots more things than the fore end hanger that can be wrong with the No.1. The list of things that he does is quite impressive.

I have also seen some of Mark Penrod's work, enough to have 1 rifle being reworked by him now, and, another on the way.
