I purchased this bolt online as a Remington SA M700 with an aftermarket shroud. Well it's not a M700 bolt. It is a 1/2" short and does not have the slot in the right locking lug. What is it for?

Model 7 single shot?
After school project?

The shroud looks like a Howa/Weatherby Vanguard or a certain model of Mossberg rifle that escapes me at the moment.(1500?)
I'm not very good at this I'd have to have it in my hands to get a closer guess at it.

My guess is a 788 bolt...

I have looked at a couple of them lately at the local gunshop... I was interested in the one in 30/30, but the guy on consignment wants too much for it in my book...$425.00...

Well, it is definitely not a 788 bolt. They had rear locking lugs. It looks like either a 600 or an XP-100.

It is definately a Remington 700SA or Model 7 bolt with a custom bolt handle and bolt shroud. The cocking piece is a dead give-a-way as is the bolt body. I don't know who made the shroud but, it looks kind of cool. They could have done a better job on the handle. None of the 721/722/725/700SA/LA/7 bolts had a slot in the lug.

Pre-1974 700’s did not have the anti-bind slot cut into the right locking lug either, but being as how this bolt is ½ inch too short it isn’t a 722 or a pre-74 700.

Look at a 788 bolt shroud and tell me that it isn’t identical to the one shown on this bolt. Not a 788 bolt, but a 788 shroud.

I'm looking at one- that's what it is.

was the 600 bolt, the one with the dogleg handle, shorter than the 7's?

The 600's and the XP-100 bolts were the same length. Changing the bolt shroud and bolt handle is no big operation. I believe the M7 and the new XR-100 actions are the same length as the 600's and XP-100's.

Thanks for all your help. Once lead in the right direction, I went to a local shop and compared the bolt to both a M600 and M7. It is a M7 bolt. The seller has agreed to take it back so all is good.

What is the price of the bolt? How can one contact the seller?
