Sako L461 "Vixen" what do you think?

What do you guys think about a Sako Vixen(two lugs) action?

A guy was auctioning off his mint Sako Vixen heavy barrel blued in 6 PPC.
He throws in a neck-sizing die, some brass and a 2.5-10X50 scope. Sako mount and rings
included. Price is 700$CDN.

I think the Sako vixen is a nice rifle!

I didn't think thought it could handle the PPC case? Has the action been rework in some way, or am I mistaken?

We have converted a number of Sako S491 - which are very similar to the Vixen - to PPC. No problems at all.

Sounds like a good deal and if it shoots as well as the ones I've had and seen it will be a steal!!!! the quality of the Sako action makes them hold their value well and their performance makes the owners hold on to them......I've had several and not a "dog" in the bunch......enjoy the gun....if you are going to paper shoot or field shoot at longer ranges I would trade the 50mm-10x scope for a 40mm and higher power to take advantage of the accuracy of the sako and 6PPC cartridge....IMO...good luck and good shooting!!!

The Sako factory original PPC's were built on the L579 or "Forester" action, rather than the L461 or "Vixen" action. Either way, $700 Canadian (about $455 US) is a hell-u-va price.

The L-461 will handle the 6 PPC round but only in single shot version...

It will handle the 6x45 with ease and it will handle the 30 rem. case necked down and shortened in all calibers, but will only take 2 down..

Gents,

Ok....time for me to put in my two cents worth.

My factory Sako A1 22PPC single-shot rifle has a bolt diameter and length equal to that of the L461. Actually, the bolts will interchange. The action lengths are equal.

Next, my factory Sako 6PPC lightweight hunter REPEATER rifle is currently being rebarreled to 17PPC-VLD.

Bottom line......Yep, Sako made the PPC in L461/A1 sized actions. Both single-shot and repeater.

Just some food for thought.

When I checked "Rifles of the World" by John Walter, it said the Vixen was made in PPC(heavy barrel repeater and single shot), but PPC repeaters are not standard chambering.
In Sam Fadala's "The Book of the Twenty-Two", he uses a Sako Vixen single-shot 22PPC extensively.

From the photo on the auction site, it seems the Vixen IS a single shot because the floorplate isn't clearly visible, nor can I see the floorplate latch button.

I certainly don't doubt Kevin that he has a factory PPC on an A1, or Vixen-equivalent action; I'm sure he knows what he's talking about.

To my knowledge, Sako only cagalogued the PPC series in the "medium" action (L579, AII, etc.). Currently, they catalogue the PPC's in their number III action (medium) in the model 75 (see http://www.sako.fi/tables.html)

There's no reason the PPC wouldn't fit in the short action; I've always wanted a Vixen in 7.62x39, which would require about the same magazine width and length.

Should make a nice 17 mach IV / 221 Fireball switchbarrel....

They were L461 and I brought the first repeating 6PPC into the USA. I bought them from John Mock who was Stoeger Canada. I was in Finland in 85 when the deal was done for Sako to make the PPC's. Mock was the first guy to order them.
As I recall I brought in 24 of them and sold them all in a flash. These were repeaters and not the single shots...all in 6 PPC.
