M1TankerMauser actions, STOP all the madness!!!!
I am going nuts trying to figure out the various Mauser actions. Which ones are large ring, small ring, large ring short action, small ring short action, large ring with small ring threads, etc.... the list seems endless.
Could someone please give me the breakdown of what actions fall into what category?

The problem was I spent most of my class time either reading gun magazines or Robert Ruark books. They were far more interesting than what the teacher was babbling on about.

Mauser98I can't remember where I found this but it might help
quote:
Note to Mauser owners:
A large number of M48 Yugoslavian large-ring M98 Mausers have recently been dropped on the market.
This M-98 is considered an intermediate action, and WILL NOT fit a Standard 98 Mauser stock.
Below is a break down of Mauser actions.
A Small ring Mausers are 1.30" in dia. and are 8.50" in length, with screw spacing of 7.620".
These include M-93-96 by Spain, Sweden, and Germany.
The M1910, M1936 Mexicans by FN and Mexico, 1.30" dia. receiver ring, 8.50" in length, with screw spacing of 7.620". Receiver is lightly different from Small ring.
The WWI German KAR98A, 1.30" dia. receiver ring, 8.70" in length, with screw spacing of 7.835" (long action, small ring).
Intermediate Large ring action Mausers, 1.40" dia. receiver ring, 8.50" in length with screw spacing of 7.620" M24 Mexicans by FN and Belgium, the M24, M47, M48 by FN and Yugoslavia.
A Large ring M98 Mauser action is, 1.40" dia receiver ring, 8.70" in length, with screw spacing of 7.835". Including M98 from WWI and WW2, Cz-24, VZ-24 and many others.
Mauser factory commercial magnums 1.50" in dia., 9.240" in length, have a hole spacing of 8.207".
Ring/Small ring size is determined by the dia of the front receiver.

Dago RedInteresting you should ask that, I was reading last night the Jack O'Conner book that was a gift to me by a very generous forum member. And last night I ran across the line that basically said (not verbatim) "there were so many manufacturers of mauser actions, commercial, military, various countrys, for arsenal and sporting that it is basically impossible to ever become an expert, even experts will find variations they had no idea existed"

vapodogdefinition.....Mauser action.....A hole in the wooden stock in which you sink money. I'd highly advise that one learns Winchester and other actions first. They're easier to learn and far more practical.
I'm now to the point that if the Mauser has the traditional thumb cut on the left side of the action I leave it alone.

I was once asked: “Hey...didn’t you go to school STUPID?â€
To which I replied: “Yeah, I did go to school STUPID, and despite all their effort I came out the same way!â€

M1Tanker323,
I start class back up on the 8th after spending the last 2 months sitting on my can in hold status. And for the record, as you should already know Mr. Carreer Counselor, IET is for the little kids. I fall under the re-class of MOS category since I have already been arouond a bit.

Art S.The Great American Gunstock website has a pretty good concise summary, particularly since it is slanted toward stock fit. The only thing it doesn't cover is barrel threads.
On our system which is RETAIN your class dates show up as AIT class dispaly so I hate to break your heart Mr. AIT Student! But you are in AIT liek it or not. Don't forget Uncle Sam didn't spend 10,000 bucks just to send me to school to come back dumb well partially dumb anyways!
I'm going to order a book tonight it is supposed to be good it is on the mauser rifles.

On all points! The Mauser was designed to be the most goof proof rifle possible the would probably be stuck in the hands of some scared piss in his pants recruit. That is, I was designed for war, The most dangerous hunting game I can think of. The thumb cut was to aid in rapid loading from stripper clips and other than being somewhat cosmetically unappealing to some, does not affect the strength or integrity of the firearm.
Once again, I say

on all counts.

CustomstoxBill, if you go to Ray's school, shut your ears when he mentions the Mex 1910's and 36's.

He can't seem to remember what it is.
