9.3x62 twist ??
the only reference i have found is the A-Square loading manual. it says the standard twist is 1 in 14. i want to use the 286 gr bullets. is this twist the right one for my use??

Bill,

Most barrel makers suggest the 14 twist. I checked Douglas and they list 10, 12, and 14 twist. Pac-Nor only lists 12 twist. Based on the velocity of this cartridge, the 14 twist should be just fine in the bullet weight that you chose.

If I remember correctly, the standard German twist rate for 9.3x62 is 260 mm, app. 10 inches.

My best luck has been the the 1x10..I shoot 250 to 320 gr. bullets in them...

Ray,

Hope you don't mind but I'll refer you back to some of your previous 9.3 threads where you had stated 1 in 10 and when I theorised that it was this increase in spin (as well as velocity) that had made the Speer 270 more frangible you checked and said your rifles had 1 in 14 twists!

Anyhow CIP twist is 1 in 14 which stabilises conventional lead cored 286gr bullets.

thanks for the help. i am curious, though.....

martin f: where did you come by this bit of information? is that from somewhere in your memory, or is there an internet site or book which contains this sort of data?

Martin F,

I'm not sure you remember correctly. Lothar Walther the German barrel manafacturer uses 1 in 14!

Bill Smith, 1894,

the question was raised in aonother thread some time ago, here or in HuntAmerica.
I looked up the twist rate in a 1941 RWS Handbook, but maybe my memory is wrong now.
I will check again.

Sorry for my error:
twist is 360mm, 14 inches.
And the RWS handbook is from 1940.

1894,

My 9.3x64 has a Lothar Walther barrel with a 1x14 twist, and that was the post you are referring to I believe..This post is referring to the 9.3x62 I believe.

My 9.3x62 Win. had a a 1x10 and the Sauer 9.3x62 has a 1x10 I believe, but I cannot not check that as it is unavailable at present..I'm having the old original stock duplicated on a duplicating machine.....

I believe you are misquoting me on this one or I misquoted you on the other, if so it was by error. I have a lot of 9.3x something around here and it does get confusing..I thought the other day I quoted some 9.3x64 loads for the 9.3x62 and went back and double checked but I had not thank goodness.

Surprisingly enough the 9.3x64 shoots all loads to the same POI and all bullet weights from 250 to 320 within an inch also...One wonders if a good barrel either shoots or it doesn't and twist may or may not be as important as theory suggest, perhaps the increased velocity is the determing factor..

Ray,

Whatever, we've cleared it up now. Maybe you should get a 9.3x57 to complete the collection, that'll probably be the only way we can get you to report on a 286gr at 2,350fps
