I was givin a gun that was left in a house to rot. It is a older shotgun that has massive amounts of rust on the inside and outside. Was wondering on the best procedure to use to cleaning off the rust. Was thinking of soaking the whole thing in something, But I am not sure what to use or where to start. can anybody give my any pointers. LLB

Kerosene or Diesel fuel might be a good thing to start with.

Go to the hardware store and purchase a bottle of Naval Jelly. This will remove the rust fairly easily. It will also remove all blue (which is a form od rust). You should end up with a clean in the white or slightly grey finish when done. Some pitting will most likely remain which can be left alone or polished out in preparation for re-blueing.

ah, wait on the naval jelly.... that will pit if you make a mistake,

get a bottle of CLR (calcium, lime, rust) and some scotch bright pads...


wipe on, and keep it wet for about 30 mins.. then padd it off

Whatever you do, don't let it soak in a bucket of diesel for any length of time. The iron will continue to rust even when submerged as the fuel already contains water or will absorb atmospheric moisture.
