Sling swivel on an octagon barrel
I recently picked up a Ruger #1 the someone rebarreled to .470 NE with an octagon barrel. It has the AH forend with no sling swivel stud. Does anyone make a barrel band that will fit a .900 oct bbl? Or are there any other ideas?

A front swivel designed for a double shotgun works well. Grovtec makes one. Here's a picture of one;

You have to mill the bottom flat, they come convex to fit the bottom rib on a double gun.

If you want a band, you'll hafta fab it yourself or pay A LOT!

For a simpler approach I use a square block of steel, attached to the bottom flat by 2 6-48 screws and sculpted to a pleasing shape and contour. You can get an idea of it from the photo below, look at the small object at the 1:00 position.

It's not close to final polish yet but you can get an idea of how it might look.

Otherwise you'll hafta start with a honkin' big block and cut it out/down to the shape you want, as you see in the photo of the base(s) in various stages of completion.

NECG has sweat on swivel bases.

I have used the Talley inletted bases and ground down/contoured the base. If you shorten them to eliminate the screw holes and thin them a bunch, they look nice soldered on a trim barrel.

If you really want one. I can fab one from 4140 Octagonal inside and out or just inside to fit a standard Uncle mikes swivel. It will be about another month before I could dedicate the time on the machine to do it though.

I am not a gunsmith but I wonder if this approach would work.

I have seen many swivels attached to round barrels by using a semicircular piece soldered to the barrel. They are just like a barrel band that has had the top half of the ring cut off. So, why not take such a semicircle and bend it so that it has a flat spot and two angles - "ears". Then it could be soldered to the bottom of the barrel and the adjacent flat on each side, that is, three of the eight flats. The piece could probably be made easily by cutting an off-the-shelf barrel band and just bending it.

Again, just a thought.

Someone here did a straddle/saddle front sight?

Shiloh Rifle Manufacturing offers a swivel mount for octagonal barrels. Considering routinely elegant rifles they deliver, this might be your choice.

Hope this helps.

I would make a straddle band, one that does not go fully around the barrel. You could make it octagon on the outside if you wish, but I think something fluid would look better.

Fairly easy to make, though time consuming and not cheap.
