Two rifle custom gun battery
04 December 2007, 01:24
WinkTwo rifle custom gun battery
I started daydreaming about the two gun custom gun battery. Practicality is the least important criterium; for me it's about nostalgia and the golden era of cartridge development, coupled with the custom riflemaker's art and the "matched pair". My nominees are:
1) 300 H&H and 375 H&H
2) 333 Jeffery and 404 Jeffery
3) 318 Westley Richards and 425 Westley Richards
4) 350 Rigby and 416 Rigby
I think with any of these two gun batteries you could hunt just about anything worth hunting. What other ideas are out there?

BulldogMasterFor me, the .300 H&H and the .416 Rigby. I just like them and the kinds of rifles that come in.

robthomAnd.....
5) 9.3x62 & 404 Jeffrey (10.75x73?)
6) 8x64S & 9.3x64 Brenneke
7) .300 Newton & .350 Newton

idahoelk10130-06 and 375 H&H no better pair that I can think of for hunting
or 9.3 and 458 WM

Hog KillerMine will be, 375H&H and 458 Lott, built on Rem.30S's.
For a custom three rifle set, add 300Wby(it is 63+ yrs old), on another Rem 30S.

That is what I would say also. You can get ammo at the grocery store and would be sufficient for all game. However the 300 H&H would be fine also.

craigsterWithout deviating from your choices, I'm goin' with the H&H's.

drm-hpAny 2 you want are the perfect 2! My problem is that I couldn't limit it to 2. I had to have 3 to make myself happy.
1)6.5-06
2)35 Whelen
3)404 Jeffery
Oh shucks, I forgot about the varmint rifles, the 22's, and then there are the ones I don't want to part with for one reason or another. Of your suggestions I would like a combo of #'s 2&3.
1)318 WR
2)404 Jeffery
Now that would be an awesome 2 rifle set
(on Mausers actions of course).
Thanks, Doug

ForrestBWink, you have all the obvious candidates covered but you're forgeting our old friend August Schüler. A nice pair of mausers properly chambered would allow you to easily hunt the world's game - provided you brought along your own ammo.
8X68 S
11.2X72 Schüler
You could even throw in a 6.5X68 S for the smaller stuff.
It really would make a nice trifecta if you don't mind the ammo difficulties prevalent outside of the Fatherland.

Rhys6.5x55 and .375 H&H. Nearly identical trejectories with some overlap in reasonable species to hunt. I could also go with a 3 gun set by adding either a .500 Jeffery or a 505 Gibbs, and make it a 4 gun with a .222 Rem.
Yes it's cocked, and it has bullets too!!!

WinkForrest, I haven't really forgotten some of the Euro pairings I think would be nice. How about:
7 X 64 Brenneke and 9.3 X 64 Brenneke
That would be a nice Euro classic battery on a standard Mauser action.
There must be some nice double gun combos as well.

fla3006If I were to own only 2 custom rifles, they would be 30-06 & 375H&H, both done British style on standard length Mauser actions.

Two classics for sure, but for stateside hunting only, I could get along quite well with the .257 Roberts and .300H&H. Given a Germanic twist, I'd select the 8X68S and 9.3X62, or perhaps the 7X57 and 8X68S. Tough choices...

loud-n-boomerFor me nostogia would be a .30-06 on a double heat-treat Springfield with Griffin and Howe Side Mount and a .375 H&H on a standard length Mauser 98 with claw mounts. Both rifles built by Duane Wiebe and engraved by Charles Lee.\
Add a .22 Long Rifle on a Winchester 52 action, and I wouldn't need anything else.

pinotguyFor bolt guns - 275 Rigby and 350 Rigby
For doubles - 246 Purdey and 369 Purdey

tasunkawitkoif for some reason, i were to only have two, they would be .30/06 and .22/250; both in some sort of yugo or czech mauser.

RiodotI have thought of a few that peak my interest
300 H&H & 375 H&H
9.3x62 & 7x57
7x57 & 257 Roberts (maybe a matched trio?)
275 Rigby & 416 Rigby
275 Rigby & 350 Rigby
300 wby & 375 wby
450/400 and 9.3x74r (both in Ruger #1s)
I'll have to think about the little calibers abit more.
another one:
9.3x62 & 416 Taylor
(for no real reason other than I like them.)

Good choice Hog Killer! How about a 458WM and a 458 Lott? I would shoot everything with the 500gr TSX and have instant one shot kills with the CRACK of the shot! Everyone else will still be experimenting with all these foolish cartridges with sometimes HORRIFIC outcomes.

oldunThis is an easy question to answer

a 275 Rigby and a 375 H&H

IndlovuI have really thought a lot about a
poetic 3 gun battery;
1. 505 Gibbs
2. 404 Jeffreys
3. 303 British
I have the first two, working on the 303.
talk about nostalgia!
below: 404 and 505 respectively
