farbedoShort Order Checkering
Our niece asked me to build a rifle for her husband to be as her wedding gift to him.
My usual checkering source takes 6 months or better, but does a top notch job so is usually worth it. She asked in mid-March and I just got the stock finished and ready. Better wood than I expected, lots of chatoyance and curl in the butt. Will really make a fine looking rifle.
Who can turn a stock around before June 29th? I fly out on the 30th for the wedding.
Thanks for any help on this one. I have a feeling that I am asking a lot.

craigsterWhy risk it ? Give him the rifle as is, tell him checkering is included whenever he wants, and then send it off.

Ahlmans will do it in 3 or 4 weeks and lady is good, forgot her name. Evelyn?

Clemson+1 for Ahlmans. That lady does a good job and does not drag her feet. She has done several for me.

farbedoThanks for the input. I'll give Ahlman's a call.
Craigster, I have a contingency plan already in place. The action I used is a Weatherby Vanguard that was in a decent walnut stock that I refinished for it. I don't want to give him an unfinished rifle. My plan would be to take the rifle in the Weatherby stock if this one isn't ready in time. Our niece is aware that this might be the case given the short order. Either way, her groom gets a new custom 7mm Mag. Pretty good deal in my book.

If Ahlmans falls through, try Jim Kobe in Mn. He does real nice checkering, but I have no idea of his current schedule.

farbedodf06, Mr. Kobe's work is very good. Also worth a call.
My brother in law has a simple saying, you don't get anything if you don't ask. Applies to asking others as well as asking yourself if you want to put in the effort.
