Do you guys think that a M 96, buildt 1910,6,5x55 will hold this cartridge.

As long as you load it to 6.5x55 levels it should hold it fine! Seriously, while it might be OK I wouldn't do it. Regards, Bill.

Well

There is a small problem, the case head diameter is larger on the 6,5X55 than on the 6,5-284 Norma. The bolt face will be a little larger. You will also encounter some trouble with the magazine since the 6,5-284 case has a larger diameter...

Stick with it in 6,5X55 or get annother rifle to rebuild.

We rechambered one long ago, a Husky model 96. It has about 28" barrel. Don't shoot it much anymore but it worked fine. We loaded it to approximate 6.5/06 velocities. I understand that this is not recomended and folks like Bill have alot of expertise in this field. FWIW, I also have a 6/284 on the same action, also with no lug setback or other headspace problems.Your results may vary. Mark

I wouldn't ruin an existing 6.5x55. Why not start with a Yugo M48 or 24/47 barreled action for about $80?

Better yet, if you want a hunting rifle, start with a commercial Mauser or CZ/Winchester/Kimber/Ruger in 260 or 6.5x55 and rechamber. You'll spend a fortune sporterizing a military Mauser unless you have the skills and tooling to do it yourself.
