So I just bought one, which is 1/8" longer than a standard box, also wider in the front although I am not sure how much (or if it is also wider in the back, but it appears to be).

It looks like a factory Mauser model, and guessing from cartidge dimenions I'm thinking it may have been for a 404 Jeffery, 9.3x64, or something along those lines. I am hoping I can get it to work for a 404 because I want one. It doesn't have the floorplate, meaning I will probably have to have one made (ching ching ching $$) unless someone here can steer me to one.

I am about to e-mail the seller to see if I can get some other dimensions - front and rear width - to post here for speculation.

Any ideas?

Good thought - forgot to mention the hole spacing is standard 98.

It is a standard 98 pattern also, with locking screws, button-lock on the floorplate, and the hole in the front of the triggerguard loop for a forward-mounted sling. I believe I have seen a couple of commercial Mausers with this style of guard.

Jim Wisner sells straddle floorplates that fit 1909 Argentine Bottom Metal. Perhaps what he has could be adapted to your bottom metal, even if you had to weld a bit of steel to it to lengthen it a bit.

That is what I was thinking - I would have the triggerguard modified to make it a lever opening / hinged floorplate. This seems like the only workable option, as I am sure I will never find the longer floorplate and it would be very expensive to have one made.

I seen that one too, I almost bought it just to look at it, let me know the dimesions and I'll see if I have anything to fit. I still have some wisner, talley, and blackburn straddle plates, and some parker hale standard hinged plate. They all vary alittle in size.

Specs:

3.43 long, x .760 front width, x .880 rear width (widest point is actually .930 - there is a small step at the rear where the wall thickens, same at the front where the widest point just behind the thickened wall is .830). All are inside measurements.

Quite a bit roomier than a standard Mauser mag box, and similar to a 9.3x62 box dimensions.

Here is TMGs trigger guard. Notice the bumps on either side inside of the mag box & it is longer also. Seems all original.

Any ideas for caliber to build? Looking for something European / English, .375 or higher - unfortunately I have enough 9.3 rifles.

According to the dimensions you list it looks like a 9.3x62 or a 10.75x68 according to Jon Speed’s “Original Oberndorf Sporting Rifles†(Page 127)

However I have four 10.75x 68 of which are two original Mauser’s and two are FN factory build rifles all have slightly differed Magazine box dimensions. The same is true for about eleven 9.3x62 Mausers ( Original build by Mauser Oberndorf, Sauer, Huskys and Sako i have.

As for possible calibre choices 10.75x68, 404, 425WR I would go with the 10.75 second option would be 425WR it is not very difficult to build and the rebated rim is an issue only for internet “Specialistsâ€

I checked 4 different straddle floorplates and unfortunantly all are too short. The longest being a wisner at around 3.975 of coverage. You might have to look into having a custom one made. I'm in the process of looking into have custom plates made for a couple enfields, I can forward the info when the details are worked out in a few months.

I have hit upon a solution - I bought 5 crappy floorplates on eBay, and am going to 'cut and paste' actually cut and TIG to make one of the proper length. I debated about using stock Enfield metal and making it hinged with a lever, but kind of like the idea of the standard military style to go with the standard military mag box.
