Toomany ToolsA-bolt barrel removal
Quick question: is the recoil lug on the Browing A-bolt threaded or is it like the Remington?
Thanks

Duane WiebeBetter call Browning...the latest I heard (10 yrs ago) DO NOT try and take off a barrel on the A-bolt..threads gall to the point of destroying action and/or barrel,,,this was an alert to all Browning dealers/gunsmiths..

Toomany ToolsDuane,
I made a new top piece for my Remington wrench, matching the profile of the top of the A-bolt and tightened it all up real good and she came apart without any galling. It looks like they used some type of anti-sieze on the threads as there was a light-blue dry powder residue on the threads. I was really surprised to find such fine threads; they measure 1"-32 which is by far the finest thread I've seen on a barrel shank.

LongshotJohn:
Was that A Bolt made in JA"pan, Brazil, Turkey, Belgum or Italy? It might have metric threads.

WestpacI remember popping the barrel on one Stainless Stalker. Got about 3 turns when she seized. I tried going back the other direction and it worked for about a quarter trun and then locked tighter than a nuns knees.
Ended up cutting the shank off and picking the threads with a boring bar. So what this means is if it all went to hell, there is still hope.

Toomany ToolsMaybe I just got lucky as this one worked out fine. I cut the threads, chambered and crowned it today and it all went smooth. Threads are 1"-32.
Several friends have told me to avoid A-bolts due to horror stories just like yours. Since I'm sort of new at this I didn't want to turn down the business but I may not do one again as my luck is usually not this good.

WestpacI've done a lot of them since that one and never had another problem. But if I do... No Problamo!
