I would think that one could buy a regular model 70 safari express and put less money into it to have a nicer gun than the custom shop builds for $3043. Especially after you sell off the old barrel and stock.

Jeff,
I've posted this before...

get a model 70 in a RUm cart...
rebarrel...
enjoy your 404...

Jeff,

The M70 is long enough, and the Winchester Custom Shop has listed the cartridge as an option. They are not really building them yet as they are still sorting out barrels and bottom metal (this was as of the SCI Convention in Reno).

Is a Model 70 action long enough to chamber for a 404 Jeffery? I was wondering why no one makes one.

I made mine about 6 or 7 years ago on the M70 Classic.
I used one in 7mm Rem Mag caliber, took off the barrel (used a new Krieger in 404 Jeff), and added Ted Blackburn bottom metal.

Ward Dobler did the gunsmithing.

Mine is not a particularly "beautiful" rifle.
It is stainless, and I had a black, baked on epoxy type coating put on it, in a laminate stock.
It is fairly weather proof though.
