ruttenRemington 721 stock replacement
I need to replace a stock on my remington 721. Was wondering if a Remington 700 long action stock is interchangable with the 721. I am looking at going with a synthetic stock.
Thanks for any help.

MSwickardHey Scott
A standard length action (ie 30-06) will work fine. The only difference between the 721 and the M700 action is the 721 tang is squared off and the action doesn't have the saftey notch cut into the action. Lastly, the 721 has a staight bolt handle. Dimension wise the actions are the same.
McMillian stocks can make stocks for the 721 but it is probably easier to get the 700 stock with just the channel cut in it and do your own relief work to fit your action.
So yes a 700 stock can be used but some modifications will need to take palce for proper fitting and bedding.
BTW where in MT are you located?

eddieharrenIf your 721 is an early model you will have to cut the barrel channel for the rear sight "dog-knot".

MasteriflemanIf you're going to go the trouble of re-stocking, a nice touch is to replace the bolt handle with a 700 bolt handle and replace the bottom metal with the 700 BDL metal all available from Brownell's. A smith would be recommended for silver soldering the new bolt handle. I've done all of the above and it makes fro a great looking rifle.
