Best Twist for a 300H&H?
I am building a 300H&H on a 1908 Mauser and I need to decide what is the best twist. Barrel will be a Vektor Match (local make, very good barrel) in a heavy sporter profile.

I am not going to shoot anything heavier than 180 gr and in all likelihood it will be 155gr Palma MK's or 168's since I want to dabble in a bit of F Class as well. Do I go 1:12 or 1:10? All opinions appreciated.

Cheers

Need Just 1 More Gun
Pete,

If you are not going to shoot a bullet longer than the matchkings, a 1 in 12 should work fine. If you shoot some of the monolithic bullets in the 180 weight, a 1:12 might be a little slow. A 1:10 twist allows for the old 220gr round nose bullets to be stablized.

I was contemplating this same problem a year or two ago when rebarreling my 30-06 and ordered a 1/12. Immediately after receiving my barrel, I found a load my '06 really liked and sold the barrel blank.

Good luck!

Most of the .300 mag match shooters I know favor the long, heavy bullets, like 200 & 220 grain Sierra Matchkings. Excellent long range performance! These are best handled by the 1 in 10 twist barrel. My .308 match rifle has a 1:13 Krieger barrel and handles the 155's & 168's quite well. Regards, Guy

I have always used a 1x10 and a quality barrel and it always worked..My present M-70 pre 64 has a 1x10...I always wanted to try a 1x12 but the 1x10 has worked so well I never could bring myself to use a 1x12...My philosophy has always been if it ain't broke, don't fix it....
