FYI

For anyone looking for a cheapie for a project this year, Midway has a closeout sale on the european styled stocks for large ring mausers. They come with a schnobble forend and metal buttplate and grip cap.

Price for a standard grade is $33 or so. The cost of the buttplate and cap alone is more than that.

I got one on a lark and received it last night. They're well inletted but a little small in pull and forearm (so much for the planned 458) My 11 year old liked the looks of it so she'll get a cute little sporter this summer.

Dan, thanks for the tip, I figure for $33 I'll take a chance, use it for a pattern if nothing else. Also couldn't pass up their closeout prices on 10.75x68 brass and bullets.

I've been sanding on it for a while. Its my first stock job, feel like I'm in over my head but we'll see how it turns out.

I ordered the Midway stock too. Now I have that dreaded dilemma of deciding on a caliber to build. Should it be a 257 or a 9.3x62??? Maybe I should just buy another stock? Man it can drive you crazy.

As near as I can tell, that Cruffler website is not being maintained, and those with the actions, JLD, may not even exist anymore.

I called JLD a couple of days ago. Women I talked to said they didn't have any barreled actions. She said they haven't had any for a long time and didn't expect any anytime soon. I asked why they didn't up date there Web sight and she just hung up on me. Sounded to good to be true I guess it was.

technically they do have an updated website. jldenter.com that same lady told me very nicely that they only had the two rifles feature on their site.

the cruffler.com site is not theirs.

Mine just arrived in the mail and I was stunned at just how nicely machined this stock was for the money. Plus their were a couple extra surprises in the package that I wasnt aware of. Then I went to go back to order more and they were all gone!!!!

Holy smokes, I ordered two, they are rough but that in itself is fine. One looked like some kind of redish orange war club with not much figure, and the other was medium to dark brown with figure and dark mineral streaking on both sides from butt to fore end. The good one was so far beyond my expectations I almost dropped it in all the excitement!!!If I would have known there were stocks like that I would have ordered 10 and sent back the ones I didn't like.....

I paid $20 extra and got the last semi-fancy they had. I was very pleased. Nice figure and shape. Yes it will need work but the price is impossible to beat. They said it needed repair. But, the slight cut will sand out with ease.
With their #1 21" 257 Roberts barrel my step son will be thrilled.

got mine.. it'll work.. for 40 bucks, i got a better deal than i expected.. i've paid (and will never again) 2.5X that for an RMF of lower quality..

I do like the way you reshaped that stock, especially the cheekpiece. It looks like yours had fairly decent wood on it also. I am hoping mine looks similar to yours.

I am also happy to see so many become enamored with the Europeon classic stock styling. This will no doubt cause a few stockmakers certain anguish who favor the American classic style though.

Some may never forgive Larry Portefield for this closeout.

Got mine Monday and was initially pleased. But when I put the barreled action in the stock, the receiver was a nice tight fit but the barrel was almost a 1/4" to the left of the barrel channel. I don't think this is normal, could anyone else elaborate on it before I make a call to Midway?

How did you get a Mannlicher? Looks good.

I received mine today and I'm quite pleased. I wish it had just a starter groove for a barrel channel though, I'm not sure what contour and from who that will fill the present channel but without a lot of wood removal.

Fully inletted with further shaping around action panels and grip area. Ugly thick piece of wood added for mannlicher length. Had to be thick so the barrel channel could be cut first without chatter. Worked well....it's easier to trim exterior wood on a mannlicher than inlet it.

Metal is a Mark X action, 6.5x55, with Springfield bottom metal. A popular custom option years ago. The rifle is for my brother Idared, and styled to his specs.

Let me display my mauser ignorance and ask if a M24/47 will fit. I think it's a intermediate length action and no it won't. Any suggestions? I'm in deep with three other projects and want to keep it in the spirit of the thread, cheap

I'm also curious what others plan to use for a barrel? Is the Adam & Bennet contour similiar to anything else or their own? Thanks.

They claim this stock was inletted for an A&B F14 Barrel channel as shown here.

I however have a hard time believing that from some of the measurements that I took from my stock and cross referenced to this site. Mine almost has the mirror dimensions on the barrel channel as the F34.

I think that was likely post-frustration relief more than anything..........the project is pushing a year. He deserved to see some progress being made.

I did buy another of these stocks in the recent special offering. I will make another pattern from it for a 1909 Argentine. I actually got a pretty good piece of wood. Very plain, but quarter-sawn and grain running correctly.

Inletting is pretty good for a semi, and you can inlet a large-ring without gaps. The bottom metal will require a bit of work, but there's enough wood to escape gaps.

Lots of wood through the tang and wrist area to allow flexibility in grip design. The existing action panels will have to be modified if they are to stay. By the time the bottom metal gets inletted, you're eating into the existing action panels. The oval cheek piece is easily shaped for use with or without comb nose fluting.

I like this stock, even though I use it as a pattern. It has a bit of cast-off and toe-out. It also allows shaping to styles I prefer.

I ordered my first of these stocks about two years ago when I first started working on my projects. At the time I ordered a barrel & stock combo from them and the barrel was an F14 it fit perfectly. I sold the barrel & kept the stock. Funny thing is I made more selling the barrel on Ebay then the combo cost me, lol.

I have another alledgedly fancy version that I'm planning to assemble my .30-06 on. It will sport a Shilen #1. It will fit fine until the last 1/3 up near the schnabel. The #1 is a liitle smaller than the channel. I figure a liitle acraglass and sawdust from sanding will disguise it pretty well.
