sheepmanGeneral gunsmith in The Woodlands, Texas area?
My son recently moved to this area and is looking for someone for general gunsmithing. Any suggestions?

MJinesWish I could say there are a wealth of options in Houston, but sadly there really are not. Two possibilities, one reasonably close to the Woodlands the other one a good drive. On Treaschwig Road, Match Grade Arms does general gunsmithing, they also build custom rifles. The other option is Dustin Mounts in Pearland. Dustin does work on high end rifles and shotguns, e.g., he does a lot of work for Friedkin. From the Woodlands, MGA is probably 30-35 minutes, Dustin would be over an hour. Both have websites.

ramrod340Match Grade Arms MGA is the only one I know of up there.

EmoryFor a place closer to Woodlands, might check with G&L Gunworks off Gulf Bank a couple of miles east of I45. Gary Lacario seems to cover the range of general gunsmith activity (except woodwork which he sends out). Includes recoil pads, custom muzzle breaks, bluing, lots of pistol tuning - especially for lawmen, barrel fluting, and a lot of Carter Country work winds up with him. Don't think he has much time for custom builds anymore but certainly has the capability.
Another recommendation for Dustin too, and you can partly justify the tough commute by usually being able to see a few higher end rifles and shotguns aroud his place...
Good hunting,

Never heard of him, that is good to know. I have always wondered why there seem to be so few general gunsmiths in Houston.

Bobby used to work for Briley I believe. Doesn't Briley do general gunsmith work anymore? Back when I lived in Katy (early 90's)...Jess Briley's crew were as good as they came for any gunsmith work.

MJinesMy sense is that Briley's tends to focus on shotgun related work, tubes, etc. but to be honest I have never tried to use them. They do have a gunsmithing website. I have generally used Dustin Mounts.
