Installing new bolt in a Rem 700
Anyone have any experience with installing a new bolt in a M700? I'm thinking of a new bolt with a Tactial bolt handle and was wondering how this will affect headspacing, etc.

The headspace will have to be checked and you can only hope to get lucky and have it so the you are short on head space then it can be easily fixed.
You could just weld on a new bolt handle to the existing bolt. much less trouble and cheeper

I've done quite a few PT&G bolts. If you go with Dave Kiff's bolt, and I don't know why a person wouldn't, you should only have to make a slight adjustment to the lugs. These bolts are machined incredibly accurate. If you know what you are doing, you can fit and headspace these bolts without pulling the barrel.

Jim Kobe has put a PG&T tactical bolt knob on a number of 700s for me.
Don't recall the cost, but not expensive at all. And zero other alterations or costs needed. He is at 952 884 6031.

Brownells have a few options for installing a new bolt handle on your existing bolt. I ground off the old knob on my 700 to the same diameter of the bolt handle shaft threaded and screwed on the new handle took about an hour..
Good luck

Hi,

As many have said, PT&G has what you need in the way of bolts and handles. They, however, do no installations to my knowledge. If you call Ashley at PT&G she will put you in touch with a local guy who does bolt handle installs for them and his prices are very reasonable. Pick your style, send your bolt, back in rifle with no head spacing issues I can think of.

Any one please correct me if wrong.

Luck,

Stephen

Given the relative ease and low cost of installing an aftermarket bolt knob on your existing bolt, it seems crazy to replace the entire bolt unless there is something wrong with your current one.

Karl at Kampfeld Custom does the nicest job I've seen replacing bolt knobs. His work really is top notch, and I've seen a BUNCH of work from other people.
