CraftsmanA quarter sawn blank is generally considered to be more stable. The figure more refined. I also prefer quarter sawn for inletting.

If the barrel channel is going to be hogged out for the "floating" concept.....there's very little advantage to one over the other.
Quarter sawn forearms will tend to move in the vertical plane, while slab sawn will tend to move in the horizontal plane.
Plus, as mentioned above.....because of the place where the blanks are taken from the log, slab sawn will be a bit more prone to move than quarter sawn. Slab blanks typically come from the area closer to the bark, quarter from area clsoer to the heart.
Pure quarter sawn blanks.......the grain running perfectly horizontal side-to-side through the butt....are the best, but pretty rare. There aren't too many of them in a log.
The definition of quarter sawn can include grain running as much as a 45 degree angle through the butt.
