Ruger no 1 factory safety button vs. aftermarket

Russ GouldRuger no 1 factory safety button vs. aftermarket
At least one vendor makes an "improved" version supposedly to allow empties to clear upon ejection, which is desirable in a DG rifle. I need a stock safety button so I am hoping someone here has done this conversion and has said stock version laying in a drawer. Anyone?

BrittmanRuss,
The conversion I did on my Ruger #1 in .375 H&H was taking the stock off, removing the safety, grinding down the front area of it and rebluing it.
I put it back together and it looked and worked perfect - now only modified.
I will do it again on my next #1 model.

clowdisDG rifle and Ruger no. 1 don't seem to go together.

Jim KobeI have one in the shop now, a 50-90 Sharps cal. The conversion item is made to be machined into the rear tang making it fit lower in the tang.
Incidentally, the owner has had it to Africa and took two buffs with it

cgbachI think a recessed safety on the No. ! really looks nice. I have wondered if Ruger didn't leave the safety sticking up to prevent the shooter from ejecting a case back into his eye?

I believe the safety you are referring to was made by legendary arms but has been out of production for several years. I can post a picture later if you would like.

RockdocWhen I had my 450/400 I had the safety altered to a shotgun style, checkered. Far better and didn’t try and pop the empties back into the chamber!

For a DG rifle, reliability is everything. I’d check with a custom shop like AHR or Griffin & Howe—they might have specs or stock parts. Test thoroughly with full-power loads after any modification.

I've shot No 1s a lot, even on driven hunts. I find the quickest way for me to reload has been to drop rifle off shoulder.

dpcdAll you have to do is grind off the front part of the safety. Then the brass will jump over it and not try to bounce back into the chamber. Recessed safety? That will cost more than the rifle.
