Thomas JonesIs this a real gamble ?
Stoped into a haswk shop, today. Found one ugly rifle ! but it has potential,(I think thats what my girl frend said about me) anyway its a military mauser with a scope in tasco mounts. It has a take off winchester barrel in 30,06. And the stock is spray painted black.
seeing it has decent scope mounts and a sporter style safty, it seems to me, It might be a great action for a .257 roberts. I would slap a timney in it. pull the stock and send it mabye to MRC for a roberts barrel. I wonder what is the chance that whooever put the model 70 barrel on the action damaged the mauser threads ? Anyway I could get into what I am calling a un named military mauser action, drilled and tapped with a sporter saftey for 125.00. seems a decent deal to me. Likley to be a big problem ? ...tj300

craigsterMaybe, maybe not. I'd think twice about using an "un named miltary Mauser action" for any type of rebuild. As you said, it
might be a great action, then again, it might not. JMO

dempseyI think you'd be spending too much money for what you'd get in the end. Sounds like it'd just be a rough military mauser with a decent barrel. Low intital purchase price isn't always the best indicator of a deal. A person usually ends up with something they aren't really happy with and it's money not well spent.

vapodogI suspect it's not a '98 and if that's the case the best move is to leave it where it is.
I doubt seriously if the receiver threads have been hurt by fitting the winchester barrel....
Go back and find out what model mauser it is.
