low scope on M96
When I sporterized my M96 Swedish Mauser I put on see-through scope mounts. I did that partly because when I hunt groundhogs, I sometimes will scare one up at about 15 ft range which makes the scope useless and the open sights essential.
But I also did it because I couldn't bend the bolt handle down far enough to clear a low mounted scope and I figured the safety lever would also hit the scope.
Now I'd like to mount the scope closer to the bore. Can anyone recommend a source for a low contoured replacement bolt handle I can weld onto my bolt? Also, are there optional safety levers made to work under a scope? Any leads would be appreciated.
As far as groundhogs at 15 ft are concerned, now I carry my Mk VI Webley just for them.

Wheeler Machinery makes a bolt welding jig and supplies bolt knobs.

Midway is a dealer for Wheeler

Brownell's carries these items(their own brand)also.

Buehler has a low mount safety that allows you to use the original bolt shroud. I don't have a link for them. Perhaps Brownell's or Midway carries this.

I would get a smith to heat the bolt handle and bend it. This is stronger than cutting and welding because you maintain the integrity of the forging. Yes there are after market safeties available try Brownells, they have several different ones available.
