joe25/06Turkish Mauser
Can the Turkish '98 Mauser be rethreaded from small to large ring? What would be the downside of doing this if it is feasible? There are many more barrel choices in large ring, and the basic action is large ring.

Not if you work from a blank. It would cost you the same or more to havethe threads recut than it would to bypass the short chambered barrels and use a blank.

ClemsonI don't see any reason why a barrel threaded for large ring could not be rethreaded for small ring. I have not tried it, but I don't see why it would not work fine.

TC1I think he's talking about the action and not the barrel.
I'm guessing you could, but why?

joe25/06Brain fade - guess i'm losing it. Never even gave a thought to starting with a blank. Just thinking prethreaded where there isn't much choice in small ring due to pressure limit worries. Guess a person could go just about any way they want with a blank and just thread to fit the Turk. Thanks for the replies.

TC1I think a Remington 700 take off barrel will work too.

They can be rethreaded. My 30-06 wears one.

preventec47Someone mentioned earlier about worrying about
pressure limit issues. Does the Turkish
Mauser have a lower strength mechanism than
other Mausers and thusly cannot shoot as hot
or hi powered loads ?
I thought they were equally strong as the German
98 or Yugos or any of the other Large Ring Mausers ? ? ?

vapodogAre you referring to the K. Kales mausers?

joe25/06Yes, mine is a K Kale, large ring with small ring threads.

vapodogI had five of them once.....I sent them off for heat treating but not sure it was necessary.
Folks here suggested they not be used for an opened bolt face cartridge but one was barreled to .35 Whelen, one to 9.3 X 62, and one to.338-06.
I see no reason to enlarge the action threads.....just mate the barrel to match what you already have.
I found them to be fine actions!
